What to expect in a session
Counselling is a collaborative journey where you and I work together to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and confidential space.
Each session is a conversation focused on you—your concerns, your goals, and your well-being. We might delve into past experiences, address current challenges, or explore future aspirations, always at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Counselling isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about understanding yourself more deeply and finding new ways to approach life’s challenges. You’ll have the space to express yourself openly, gain new insights, and develop practical strategies for creating positive change in your life.
My Approach
At the heart of my practice is a deep belief in the power of human connection and the potential for growth within every individual. As an Integrative Humanistic Counsellor, I draw from a range of therapeutic models to tailor our work together to your unique needs and experiences. My approach is rooted in the humanistic tradition, with a strong emphasis on Person-Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Existential Theory.
In our sessions, you’ll find a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings freely. Person-Centred Therapy guides me in offering a compassionate, empathetic environment where your authentic self can emerge and thrive. Gestalt Therapy supports our work by encouraging you to stay present, helping you become more aware of your emotions and how they shape your experiences. Through Existential Theory, we’ll explore life’s deeper questions—meaning, freedom, and responsibility—empowering you to live with greater purpose and authenticity.
Together, we will navigate life’s challenges, helping you uncover the inner resources needed to face them with courage and resilience. My goal is to support you on your journey.
Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt therapy aims to help focus on the present to understand what is actually happening in their lives at this moment, and how it makes them feel in the moment, rather than what they may assume to be happening based on past experience. Person Centered Therapy
Person-centered therapy, employs a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in sessions such that, in the process, they discover their own solutions. This occurs when the therapist is listening without judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience (https://www.psychologytoday.com/ie/therapy-types/person-centered-therapy).
Existential Theory
The existential approach stresses that:
- All people have the capacity for self-awareness.
- Each person has a unique identity that can be known only through relationships with others.
- People must continually re-create themselves because life’s meaning constantly changes.
- Anxiety is part of the human condition. (https://www.psychologytoday.com/ie/therapy-types/existential-therapy).
What if I'm afraid?
Therapy is often misunderstood, leading to fear or hesitation about seeking help. However, therapy is not something to be feared; rather, it’s a valuable resource for personal growth, healing, and self-understanding. The idea that therapy is only for those with severe mental health issues is a common misconception. In reality, therapy is for anyone who wants to improve their quality of life, gain insight into their emotions, and develop healthier coping strategies.
One reason people fear therapy is the belief that it involves reliving painful experiences. While therapy may touch on difficult topics, it is done in a safe, supportive environment where you are in control of the pace and depth of exploration. A skilled therapist provides guidance and empathy, ensuring that the process is manageable and constructive.
Additionally, some people worry about being judged or misunderstood. However, therapy is a non-judgmental space where you can express yourself freely without fear of criticism. Therapists are trained to listen with compassion and to help you navigate your thoughts and feelings in a way that promotes healing.
Ultimately, therapy is an empowering experience. It’s an opportunity to understand yourself better, build resilience, and create positive change in your life. Far from being something to fear, therapy can be one of the most supportive and transformative journeys you embark on.
